Passive voice identification and workarounds

Passive voice uses the verb of being "to be" or one of its forms. We
identify passive voice and suggest an action verb to improve the sentence.

You should always try to write technical and academic documents in active
voice. But sometimes you must use passive voice. If you say "The sky is
blue," there is no way to make the sky show action. Unless, of course,
it's falling.

Grammer, usage, and mechanics

We will identify and suggest corrections for grammatical errors, such as
dangling or misplaced modifiers, incorrectly used reflexive pronouns,
incomplete sentences, subject-verb disagreement, and run-on sentences.

We will identify and suggest corrections for errors such as misspelled words
incorrect punctuation and capitalization, and similar problems.

We will identify and suggest corrections to problems with prepositions, verb
tense, and a long list of commonly misused words and word pairs, including
"who-whom," "farther-further," "lie-lay," "to-too," and many, many more.

Structural correction and improvement

Many writers have trouble with structure and organization. We assist by
identifying empty sentences, non-parallel ideas, sentences and paragraphs
that are too long or unorganized, and similar problems. Then we provide
suggestions to help the writer overcome these problems.

Red-pen markups and additional note sheet

We do all editing with a red pen (or other color of your choice). Markups
use generally accepted proofreading marks except where the meaning of
an alternative mark is obvious.

At the client's option, we include a typed note sheet indicating why
we performed certain actions and not others.
